Big Props To Rimmel London
Big props to Rimmel London for creating two ab fab mascaras for under $8, and to my BFF Kristen for bringing this brand into my lifestyle.
A few weeks ago, Kristen called me to wax poetic about the fluttertastic virtues of Glam'Eyes Mascara. Like she promised, it delivered high octane lashes like you wouldn't believe. This mascara ain't for the faint of heart, and you wallflowers best save this tube for a night out. It gives the eye a sexy, dramatic look that is sure to set tongues wagging.
But I was most impressed by my impulse buy. CVS was offering a buy one, get one half off promotion...so I also tossed Lash Maxxx Mascara into my basket. This mascara magically multiplies my sparse lashes and gives them a glossy black coat, with zero clumps. The wand takes a little getting used to, as it applies the product with a comb comprised of ultra-fine bristles. But once you get the hang of it, you'll marvel at how believably lush your lashes look. The fringe is so natural, you'll forget that you aren't genetically blessed.
Run your ass out and buy both of these mascaras - for the price of one department store tube!
Make Your Pearly Whites Whiter
A fresh, bright, white smile never goes out of style and is the perfect compliment to any look. Here are some tips from Women's Health about brightening up your pearly whites:
Before you bleach
Consult your dentist, because not all teeth react to whitening the same way.
If you go to a pro
The whitening agents dentists use are up to three times more powerful than at-home versions, so you'll see results faster than if you go solo.
No-tech tricks: Bring on the baking soda
The refrigerator deodorizer also removes discoloration on your teeth.
Feel the crunch
Snack on food that are high in cellulose: the strong starchlike compound is found in celery, carrots, and apples and can act as a natural abrasive, cleansing teeth and removing surface stains naturally.
Be a little shady
Stick with blue-based red and pink lipsticks or clothes in dark colors. Warm colors (yellow, orange, brown, warm shades of red) worn close to your mouth will only bring out the yellow in your teeth.

Make-up Trend: 60's Pale Lipped Look
The '60s washed-out makeup: long, doll-like lashes with pale milky lipstick is making a comeback, and Tanushree sports it during this photoshoot! Embrace this opaque, almost-white lipstick hue, but pair it with a burst of deep rosy bronzer to warm up your face and look a little less like a mannequin.
Older women will want to think twice about this trend. Starting in their 40s, women tend to loose the natural pigments in their skin, so a rosy beige will liven up the face.

Recessionista's Fabuless Pick of the Week: L'Oreal Paris HIP Jelly Balm
I am absolutely obsessed with L'Oreal Paris HIP Jelly Balm right now. They're the poor (wo)man's MAC Tendertones...except they're better, IMO.
The creamy balm lends a juicy pop of color to lips without the stickiness of your average gloss. The six shades have a magic quality that flatter all skin tones (I am partial to Plush). They're so moutwatering and moisturizing that they render your chapstick obsolete. And when you're having a bad day, HIP Jelly Balm is the perfect pick-me-up beauty buy.
They smell like cotton candy, taste like caramel, and cost less than $10. Does it get any better?
Buy the entire set without breaking the bank.
Available at mass market retail stores and at drugstore.com.

Make-up Trend: Ageless, Flawless Skin
When it comes to beauty, it's important to pick what you put on your skin wisely. So instead of succumbing to Botox needles to get a smooth, perfect face like Rekha, try one of the new creams made with synthetic snake-venom, which helps relax wrinkles just as effectively as injectable solutions.

Make-up Trend: Burgundy Lips
Kareena Kapoor's look for the Globus Winter Collection "was inspired by the French," says makeup artist Mickey Contractor. "She has piercing green eyes, the perfect rosebud mouth and a sheer, radiant face—it was modern and timeless at the same time." The statement-making lips were simply achieved with M.A.C Cremesheen Lipstick in Party Line.
The mouth was able to stand out thanks to a clean slate as the background. Mickey applied M.A.C Studio Tech in NW15 with his fingers. "Using your fingers heats the product just a bit and leaves a seamless finish," he said.

What A Doll!
Artist Noel Cruz took an ordinary doll, removed the factory paint and repainted the figurine using acrylics after he was inspired by the 'enigmatic beauty' of Angelina Jolie. What resulted is, perhaps, one of the most lifelike and creepy dolls I've ever seen.
The doll is missing Angie's signature tattoos. But Cruz, who specializes in painting dolls to resemble celebrities, says that they can be added for an extra cost of between £10 and £20, depending on the complexity of the design. And the doll can don different wigs for a variety of looks.
So how much will one of these doppelganger dolls run you? A private bidder recently paid £2,000 for his/her own mini Angelina.
I'd bet cash money that the anonymous buyer is none other Jennifer Aniston, and that she's sticking pins in that thing like it's her J-O-B.

Warm and Fuzzy Eyeshadow: Lise Watier Cachemires Bleu Quartet
How many of you own an eye shadow quad with no clue about where and how to apply the colors? I can relate…I’m a beauty junkie, not a makeup artist. Which is why I am such a big fan of Lise Watier’s eye shadow palettes. Included with the kits are directions on how to achieve different looks, complete with color-coded diagrams.
This summer, I was all about the Eye Quartet in Mer. And now that the lazy days of summer have come to an end, I’m feeling kinda blue. In a good way.
For fall, Lise Watier presents two seasonal colour quartets in soft, soothing shades – my favorite being Cachemires Bleu. This palette of (composed of a grey taupe, a sky blue, an anthracite blue and a luminous pale pink) is both subtle and refined, allowing infinite mix-and match possibilities. And it comes nestled in a pretty knitted pouch, accented with sequins!
To create the look above, I used products from Lise Watier’s new collection, Les Cachemires:
Cachemires Bleu Eyeshadow Quartet
Eye Shine Metallic Eyeliner in Marine
Metal Liner in Marine
Make-up Trend: Radiant Skin
She might be preggers, but Aashish Chowdhary's gorgeous wife Samita Bangargi's flawless visage shows no signs of sleep deprivation or the typical fine lines of a woman who is pregnant for the first time. The secret to youthful skin might be as close as your makeup bag, so cancel that Botox appointment and read on.
Smooth tinted moisturizer over skin with a damp makeup sponge (it creates a more seamless, natural finish). Then stroke a soft luminizing concealer wand (it's precise) into crevices that tend to look more pronounced with age, like along the laugh lines, outer corners of the eyes, top of the chin, and forehead creases.

I See London...I See France. I See Through Your Underpants!
While reading today's newspaper, I came across an article about millimeter wave passenger imaging technology - a total body scanner that allows security personnel to view travelers as if they were naked. In a matter of seconds, this technology can detect weapons, explosives and other threatening items concealed under layers of clothing - without physical contact.
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), this is how the Millimeter Wave Scanner works:
* Beams of radio frequency (RF) energy in the millimeter wave spectrum are projected over the body’s surface at high speed from two antennas simultaneously as they rotate around the body.
* The RF energy reflected back from the body or other objects on the body is used to construct a three-dimensional image.
* The three-dimensional image of the body, with facial features blurred for privacy, is displayed on a remote monitor for analysis.
The threat of terrorism is frightening. But so is thought of some TSA official spying my secret lumps and bumps.
Millimeter wave technology is currently being utilized in various government locations across the United States, as well as international aviation and mass transit environments.
So I guess it's time to stock up on some more Spanx.
Beauty Product of the Week: Phenomen'eyes
What is it? Givenchy's red hot, brand new Phenomen'eyes Mascara is "A revolutionary new mascara designed to grip at lashes starting at the roots. Givenchy Phenomen'eyes Mascara perfectly curls and separates lashes. It has a high-tech, patented round sphere at the tip of the precision wand that reaches every lash and adapts to all eye shapes. The result? A beautifully fanned-out panoramic effect, holding the curve of your lashes perfectly in place." Available at Sephora in either black or brown for $27.
What did you think? The design of this mascara wand is what sets it apart from other mascaras in on the market. It looks like a medieval weapon (not a mace, but a flail), and it allows you to coat lashes at every bizarre angle imaginable. It goes on relatively easily, though I find it a bit thick. It made my lashes very long, perfectly curled, and relatively separated. I still ran a comb through my lashes to make sure they were separated.
What was really cool was that I was able to get the corners of my eyes and make a clear definition between my upper and lower lashes. The wand allows for so much flexibility. The design is not only interesting, but it's also functional.
The final verdict? I'm not always one to fall for hyped up products, but Phenomen'eyes is pretty darn good. If you have $27 to spend and you're dying to try something trendy in the world of makeup, this is a great pick. Your lashes will stand out and the unique design of the wand is fun to use, especially if you're a makeup junkie. If you have an upcoming special event and want to highlight your eyes, Phenomen'eyes will do the trick.

It Was A Happy Birthday, Thanks To All Of You!
Thanks so much for all of your well wishes! I may have started my birthday feeling alone...but as the day comes to a close, I am feeling very loved and appreciated. Merci beaucoup!
PS - My parents bought me my first pair of UGG boots, and I'm in love. I know I'm a little late to the UGG party, but I had to share. I'm praying for an unseasonably chilly day so that I can start breaking them in.

MAC Ungaro: Q&A With Esteban Cortazar and Sharon Dowsett
MAC collaborated with Emanuel Ungaro designer Esteban Cortazar on a limited edition line, inspired by the designer's fall 2008 collection. The 14 piece collection is the product of the collaborative efforts of Cortazar, MAC's product development team and Sharon Dowsett, Head Make-up Artist for MAC. What do the masterminds behind the highly anticipated collection have to say about the inspiration and products? Spoiled Pretty finds out...
Esteban Cortazar, Head Designer at Emanuel Ungaro
Q: Who is the Ungaro woman?
A: "The Ungaro woman celebrates life, she loves nature, she smells fantastic, like peonies, gardenias and jasmine in a subtle way that’s so feminine. She adores feminine fluidity, beautiful colours, soft textures and unexpected prints – she’s a true individual with her style, a free spirit."
Q: Who are your muses?
A: "All my girlfriends are my muses – women who love to dance, to laugh."
Q: Did you have any preconceived ideas as to what feeling you’d like the makeup to communicate this season?
A: "Makeup is a huge part of a feminine woman who uses it to express her individuality and her mood. This season I wanted the makeup to come across as very natural and balanced…although natural can still have a strength to it. I wanted everything to be soft in the face. A little earth in the eye, to give it weight, but in a subtle way."
Q: You must be excited to be collaborating with MAC on this range – how long have you worked together?
A: "I’m so excited about the collaboration with MAC– they are so forward-thinking and so believing. They believed in me from my first show since I was friends with all the girls from the Miami store. I really feel part of the MAC family."
Q: Knowing that this makeup collection will have the Ungaro name to it, what was most important to you in terms of it’s aesthetic?
A: "It’s important to me that the makeup feels timeless-modern, but still makeup that a woman will always want to wear."
Sharon Dowsett, MAC Lead Makeup Artist
Q: How did you work with the MAC team backstage to ensure they understood the feeling you wanted for the look?
A: "Backstage I had to keep reminding the team to make it look less professional – I wanted it to look like shadow rather than eye shadow. Like Monet’s Water Lilies, it looks better the farther back you stand. When I visited his masterpiece at l’Orangerie, I was struck by how many colors he’d used to create brown, without actually using brown. There’s not a lot of makeup but a lot of thought’s gone into it."

Q: Who is the Ungaro woman this season?
A: "She’s a bit of a paradox – a girl who lets her hair dry naturally but also wears a couture dress. Feminine but not girly, stylish but not concerned, warm but not bronzed. Esteban described her as the type of girl who would dab jasmine under her ears as her perfume…I think he knows women like this!"
Q: What similarities do you see in the attitude and aesthetic of MAC and woman Ungaro?
A: "Not forced or contrived…although she isn’t afraid to wear makeup either. In this way, the Ungaro and the MAC woman have a similar aesthetic – they both have a definite sense of style and know who they are."
Q: The makeup feels very effortless, very innate. Was this your intention?
A: "It can take a bit of practice to be this kind of relaxed, effortless Ungaro woman. I suppose some women are born with it, but others of us don’t necessarily have that inherent refinement…we have to build it. Hopefully these products will make it simpler."
Q: How did you work with MAC on the products to get the colors and textures exactly right?
A: "I asked the MAC product development team to make a few changes to the products I’d used at the show since I'd created bespoke mixtures to get the shades exactly right. I requested that the orange eye shadow be less yellow, the brown be warmed up and the violet more vibrant. Fortunately you can make anything by combining pigments and mixes from the pro range and we also looked at some of my favourite theatrical products for inspiration."
Q: As a makeup artist it must be a complete dream to be able to create your own products, especially with MAC’s product development team and all their expertise at your disposal. Were there any constraints put on you by them, though?
A: "It’s such a dream to collaborate on a collection of products and MAC was incredibly free with me, there were no marketing constraints or anything to limit my creativity. They said ‘Be an artist and we will do the rest’."
Q: What are your thoughts on the final collection?
A: "I was really pleased when first saw the collection, as it was so close to the makeup created for the show with some pleasant surprises. I think that was to be expected, as the product development team had been very attentive during the whole process in paris and we’d been communicating by email since. I’m especially thrilled with the crushed rose and stone pink cream colour bases…my assistant said ‘in sickness and in health’ when I applied them to her! And the lip stain is brilliant…it doesn’t budge and makes no mess. love the mink brow set as it roughs up the brows and gives an expression of fierce femininity but the brown mascara struck me as slightly unnecessary as it’s already available in stores. Looking at everything together, I thought the whole collection needed an edge or juxtaposition…it could, in fact, be more painterly. I experimented with pencils and fell in love with an old pro blue, but was concerned that it wouldn’t be possible to include a completely new product at such a late stage. I asked Gordon Spinet if we could swap it for the mascara and we had several conversations about what could be done in the short time frame. After a bit of research, Gordon came up with Auto Blue Techno Kohl, which he said was a point of view on blue…watery, like an inky teal, which you could smear like eye shadow. Magic words to a makeup artist!"
Q: Which are your favourite products from MAC for Ungaro?
A: "I think the Cream Colour Bases are my favorites but everything’s now in my kit and own makeup bag."

MAC Ungaro
Live from backstage at the Fall 2008 Collections, It-Boy designer, Esteban Cortazar, and MAC have come together to create a special colour collection as dreamy, refined, and, well, Parisienne as anything this side of the Avenue Georges V, exclusively ours! A limited edition for lips, cheeks, eyes…chez Ungaro, only for MAC.
"Our association with Ungaro is really exciting as we’ve supported Esteban for many years. He’s reflective of an attitude and movement for venerable fashion houses to reinvent their brands by employing new emerging talent, something that’s a core value of MAC," explains Creative Director, James Gager.
The collaboration also represents the many personalities and aesthetics to which MAC makeup appeals. "MAC’s a high/low fashion brand," continues Gager. "We follow equally couture and street culture, a sense of yin and yang is inherent to the brand and our customers – heavy-duty dramatic makeup alongside that which is girly, fresh and light. Following from our dramatic and outrageous collaboration with McQueen last year, we felt that Ungaro represented another side of MAC’s personality."

Eye Makeup For The Office
When you're going out for a night on the town, you can play up your eyes and create a fun, dramatic look. The smoky eye is a the classic choice for a more made up, dressy look. But when it comes to getting ready for a boring day of routine at the office or in the classroom, what's the best way to wear eye makeup?
If you work in a professional environment, you need to tone down your look and go for something subtle and natural. For the best office look, use more natural and neutral colors which blend well with your natural skin tone.
I don't know about you, but the lighting in my office is less than ideal. Keep this in mind when getting ready. Try using a base foundation with warm tones that will offset that sickly color florescent lights cast on your skin. Pink tones or anything with too much yellow in it should be avoided. After your foundation is on, try a warm shade of a neutral, beige, or brown eye shadow. For a little more fun, try out a metallic bronze shade, being careful to avoid too much shimmer. Glitter at the office is not hot.
Don't forget a little eye pencil or smudged eyeshadow around the lids to accent the shape of your eyes. A coat or two of mascara will further accentuate your eyes. Use a dark brown or black mascara and wiggle the wand at the base of your lashes for a thicker lash line and a more defined look.
When I'm in a rush to get out the door in the morning, I just lightly line my top lids and then sweep Bare Escentuals Warmth over my lids. I top it all off with a touch of mascara and head out with a natural look that embraces the less-is-more mentality that works best in the office.
Whatever you do, remember: do NOT apply your makeup in the car on the way to work. Every time I see a woman doing that, I want to ram her off the road. Safety first! Do your makeup at home or in the bathroom in your office...not while trying to drive.
Ok, lecture over. Now: Get to work!
