Spring and summer are just around the corner, bringing along cheerful and vibrant colors. So, as the colors of the rainbow translate into your clothes, allow them to filter into your make-up as well. Make-up for Spring/Summer 2008 is all about bright hues, celebrating the joyous mood of the season. It’s the season for super glossy squeaky-clean skin, completely free of foundation. The idea is to drink a lot of water to flush away all the toxins to get radiant skin. Make-up artist Nayana Billings, explains, “Foundation is a big no-no, during the day or night. We make-up artists call it the sheer clean look. Drink lots of water to keep your skin healthy. At the most, use tinted moisturizer with SPF. No powder! Reiterating her viewpoint, make-up artist Gouri Kapur says, “Foundation is out. All you should do is use a good concealer to get rid of the dark spots. The drama centers around the eyes this spring/summer.”
The eyes do all the talking this upcoming season. And a bunch of colors are heading their way. Right from sunny yellows, aqua blues, baby pinks, emerald greens to sunburnt oranges - the vibrant color palette practically picks all the hues from the rainbow. The colors may sound intimidating but they look good when applied properly. Match them with the color of your clothes, give it a dramatic contrast or tone them down for a subtle pop of color. Since your wardrobe will be on the brighter side this year, borrow colors from your clothes for your eyes. For example, if you are wearing blue jeans and a white shirt, use blue eyeliner in the lash line to bring out the whites in your eyes.
Yellow is the color of the year and interestingly it has translated into eye make-up as well. Agrees Nayana, “Yellow and lime green are hot favorites in the fashion industry this time. If you want to underplay them, use shades like blue, pink and orange. White kohl has replaced the standard black. Use silver shimmer or glitter eyeliners on the eyes at night.”
For Gouri, its the soothing emerald or aqua green that everyone should sport on the eyes this season. “Green is the color this spring/summer. Blend it with yellow to create some drama. It suits desi skintones extremely well, works beautifully for both day and night and really makes the eyes pop. Wear contrasting eye shadow to your outfit. For instance, if you apply yellow eye shadow, wear green or blue eyeliner. At night, go subtle on the eye shadow and use a blue or a green eye pencil instead of black.” insists Gouri.

On to the pout, glossy pinks and reds dominate. To which Gouri says, “Gloss is in. Matte pastels are good for the day. Try lip colors like pinks, rusty reds and coral-oranges.” Nayana recommends, “Go red on the lips. Whether it's winter or summer, red looks great on Indian skin and makes it look brighter. Shades of pink are good for those who want to be safe. Pale nude skin with red lips and shimmery smoky eyes are the! Hot pepper red is a very flattering color for the lips. Please say goodbye to nudes. They are so last season!”
