Make-up Trend: Bronzy Smoky Eyes

Looking demure and absolutely gorgeous, Kajol gives us yet another beautiful cover this month. Remember this one from last month? Gracing the cover of Anokhi Magazine, Kajol looked stunning in bronzy smoky eyes and pale pink lips. To recreate her look, apply a bronzy powder shadow on the lids and black matte eye shadow in the crease and outter lids, blend the two well. Line upper and lower lashes with black kohl, then follow with two coats of black mascara. Line your lips with a neutral lip pencil and apply a pale pink lipstick on top.

Make-up Trend: Bright Green Eye Shadow and Peachy Lips

Kajol looks refreshingly pretty on the cover of the latest issue of Asian Woman, green eye shadow and peachy lips may sound crazy, but the combination looks lovely when applied properly. To get the look, apply a peachy pink eye shadow on your lids then blend a bronzy eye shadow in the crease. Apply black eye liner on your top lid. On the bottom lid, apply a forest green eye shadow using a tight, angular brush. Smudge the color with your finger. Curl your lashes and swipe two-three coats of mascara on your lashes. For your lips, line your lips with a nude lip pencil, and then apply a coral peachy lip gloss.

Make-up Trend: Purple Smoky Eyes

 

Kajol looked stunning at the Berlin International Film Festival, her purple smoky eyes looked captivating and made her eyes pop. To get her simple look, use a black eye pencil to trace your top lash line from the inner corner to the outer. Then, use the same pencil on your lower lash line and smudge both the top and bottom. Apply an eggplant eye shadow over your lid and into your crease, blending the color up and outward. Dust a nude highlighting eye shadow over just your browbone and finish off with two coats of black mascara.

Make-up Trend: Dark Smoky Eyes

Kajol looked absolutely gorgeous in a red saree and smoldering, smokey eyes at the My Name Is Khan premiere in Abu Dhabi. Make-up artist Mickey Contractor applied M.A.C Blacktrack Fluidline as a base, to get the black to really show up. Next, apply M.A.C Carbon Eye Shadow on your entire lid, blend M.A.C Print Eye Shadow in your crease and blend the shadows well together. To finish off, apply M.A.C Orb Eye Shadow to your brow bone, and make sure to blend the crease and brow bone well. While promoting MNIK at a radio show for BBC Network Kajol looked polished and elegant. Her fresh nude lip was a three step process. Make-up artist, Mickey Contractor wanted the lips to be perfect, so he lined them ever so lightly with a warm brown pencil, then topped it off with a creamy peachy nude lipstick. "I finished by highlighting the center of the lips with a few swipes of shimmery gloss,” he said.

Mickey Contractor's Step-by-Step Smoky Eye Tutorial

Face

Mickey stresses on moisturizing the skin lavishly with M.A.C Studio Moisture Fix. “Start with lots, you can remove the excess with tissue later,” he says. Go easy on the oily parts of the face. Apply more around the jaw to prevent blotchy make-up. Let it soak in, it makes blending easier. Dot the T-zone with M.A.C Select Cover-Up and then blend all over. Then mattify it down with M.A.C Select Sheer/Loose Powder. The concealer from the T-zone spreads evenly as base to the rest of the face at this stage. It is best to blend the powder with a brush with light, even strokes; excess powder can be buffed away. Use the powder that is the same color as your foundation. Don’t forget the neck. If needed, use more powder on the neck to bring an even tone. To compliment the smoky eyes mix M.A.C Gingerly Powder Blush and M.A.C Mocha Powder Blush and brush it on the cheeks, finish lightly on your chin and forehead as well. Also touch it over your hairline to get rid of any residual powder. You don’t need 20 colors, buy four or five like peach, pink and brown, mix and match from there. Cream blush is best dabbed with fingers, don’t forget to matte it out with some powder.

Eyes

On the eyelids, Mickey uses M.A.C Creme Colour Base in Shell and then brushes some powder over it to bring it to the same texture as the rest of the face. He then uses M.A.C Blacktrack Fluidline, and smudges it a bit. He then applies M.A.C Folie Eye Shadow, a brown matte, and blends well, leaving no sharp lines. He then outlines the eye (top and bottom lid) from the inside with M.A.C Blacktrack Fluidline for a black kohl effect. M.A.C Folie Eye Shadow is again applied with M.A.C 219 Pencil Brush under the lower eyelids to elongate the eyes. He then takes M.A.C Carbon Eye Shadow on a slant brush and blends over M.A.C Folie Eye Shadow on the lower lash line. Curl your lashes and apply a mixture of M.A.C Fibre Rich Mascara and M.A.C Plush Lash Mascara for a false eyelash effect. Then use M.A.C Brown Down Eye Shadow with the 266 Small Angle Brush and go over the eyebrows. A second coat of mascara and this finishes the smoky eyes. The Creme Colour Base acts as an eye shadow base. The shadow won't move and neither will it crease. If make-up smudges, clean it up with a wet Q-tip. An eyelash curler is essential. “Actresses always carry one in their bag!” Hold your lashes in an eyelash curler. Count till 20.

Lips

Use M.A.C Spice Lip Pencil to outline and fill in the lips with M.A.C Viva Glam 5 Lipstick, and top it off with M.A.C Viva Glam 5 Lipglass. Don’t sharpen the lip liner too much. Always round the tip off. Dual tone lips need to be filled with lip liner. Filled-in lips makes the lip color stay on long.

• Play down lips with smoky eyes.

• Puffy eyes can’t be covered with make-up. Just hold your chin up to make sure it doesn’t show!

Mickey Contractor. He’s the man whose magical make-up wand touches Bollywood’s most famous faces. He is the one who sets India’s strongest beauty trends on the catwalk and off it. Having been around for around three decades, he knows the pulse of a pigment like no one else. During a Vogue India cover shoot, Kareena didn’t give a single angle without him. During her wedding, Aishwarya didn’t budge an inch without him. He is, in short, make-up’s most influential man in the country. Mickey, director of make-up artistry, M.A.C India, the best thing that's happen to Bollywood's make-up vans.

Do you remember the first time with Bollywood make-up?
I started in the late 1970s as an assistant to Pandhari Juker. My first time on the sets was at Manoj Kumar’s Kranti. I was allowed to hold mirrors for character actors! My first independent film was Saath Saath in 1982. It starred Deepti Naval and Farooq Shaikh. I did the make-up for Farooq and some character actors.

Three decades! Things must be so different now…
Oh yes! Frankly, I feel we are in a different era altogether. Those were the days when you couldn’t find a single decent lipstick! In fact, it’s uncanny how M.A.C has played a role in shaping my career. When I was doing Kajol’s first film, Bekhudi, I remember buying my first few M.A.C lipsticks in Canada. I still remember that I bought Taupe, Twig and Diva.

From Kajol’s first film to her milestone smoky look in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham to now…. How has the make-up changed?
Lots! I did Bekhudi and now in December, I will do My Name Is Khan, Karan Johar’s latest film with Shah Rukh Khan. When I look back I can say that I wouldn’t do her make-up now like I did in those days. But that was the trend in those years. Today, it would be completely different. After M.A.C, my techniques have changed dramatically. Also, my perception of her face has changed. She has changed from a teenager to a mother. I have changed from a bachelor to a father of two!

Priyanka Chopra in Dostana

Which are your new films?
There’s Drona that is out on October 2 with Priyanka Chopra. I have done bits and pieces for her in Fashion and there’s Priyanka again in Dostana where she’s got a tawny look, typically Miami.

Do you have a special chemistry with Priyanka Chopra?
(Laughs) She tells me that when she was a model I did a really bad campaign for her and made her look like shit but I don’t remember anything about it! It’s the first time that I have done six films in a row with someone and I don’t think it will happen again. There’s a great comfort factor.

Coming to M.A.C, how did the Indian skin-specific foundations come about?
When I joined MAC, the only product that I didn’t use much was their foundation. I wasn’t happy with their colors and we had to mix quite a few shades to get the color. This was time consuming and also a problem for continuity. So my colleague Vimi Joshi and I started mixing and came up with new shades for the Indian skin tone. Very soon, we will launch compatible concealers.

What exactly is your role in M.A.C?
Well, I endorse the brand, somewhat like the face of M.A.C in India. I take all the trends and customize them and make them consumer-friendly. I take international trends and make them suitable to the vision of Indian designers. I also hold master classes and educate the masses on techniques.

M.A.C for Manish Arora

Designer Manish Arora has mentioned he is collaborating with MAC…
M.A.C has worked with Manish on many of his shows. We have been constantly backing him and providing him with proper infrastructure. When M.A.C came to India they wanted to do a designer collaboration. But it made sense to go with someone to whom make-up matters. And for Manish, make-up is a very vital part of his package. We have been working on his line for two years because testing takes a really long time. Then we also need to check for scientific reactions like oxidation, etc. Manish Arora's collection is now available.

Where does M.A.C and make-up fit in the current Fashion Week scenario?
It goes hand in hand. Fashion without make-up is like a sari without a petticoat! During Fashion Week every designer wants to outdo one another and most of the time the pressure falls on the make-up artist. We realize that dramatic make-up can take away from the clothes and the idea of Fashion Week is to showcase the designer’s clothes. Hair and make-up are just used to pad things up. Many designers are now understanding the equation. I hope some day roles are reversed and we show our trends while the designers are willing to take a backseat just like we do now!

• How would you describe the look that’s in this year?
  It’s the bare look. I believe less is more. For example, I gave Aishwarya Rai Bachchan fresh, no make-up look for her Lux Provacatuer Launch. She has minimal make-up on, but it appears that she has none, except for eye liner. Make-up now has become subtler than in the eighties. I am waiting for the day when we can do away with false eyelashes and lipsticks when we show an actress mourning or just waking up from bed.
  
  
• You’ve done Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna where you’ve given the actors a glamorous look...
  I’ve worked with Karan Johar in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and K3G and understand what he requires. I’ve done the look for Rani Mukherjee. I’d given different looks to the two different ladies but I avoided taking up Preity’s part since I did not want it to clash with that of Rani. I usually avoid working with the actresses in the same age group to avoid ego clashes.
  
  
• Have you been approached by filmmakers down South?
  Not until now. I think my budget is slightly higher for them. I’ve noticed that some southern filmmakers like Mani Ratnam have, of late, gone in for the subtle look.
  

• Hypothetically speaking, if you had worked in Devdas, would you have given the lead artists a different look?
  I would have made Paro and Chandramukhi look more authentic.
  

• What are your future projects?
  I work on one film at a time. I’ll be doing Yash Johar’s next production, Tashan; Goldie Behl's Drona; and Harry Baweja's Love Story 2050. I work only with directors and actresses who’re willing to experiment. Stars like Priyanka, Kajol, Aishwarya, and Kareena are very open to trying out different looks. It’s taken me 24 years to succeed in cutting down on heavy make-up. Hopefully, in another five years, I’ll be able to bring in the Hollywood kind of bare, fresh look.

He adds that it’s payback time for him. “Even if it means that I will be completely exhausted through the day, I don’t care.”

Mickey thinks that some people backing off from charity is ‘weird’. He says, “We must not forget that one lipstick can buy a thousand condoms and can be instrumental in saving a thousand lives.”
