- Our skin has seven layers. The outer layer of the skin is dead, so any skin problem needs to be addressed at the inner level.
- Assuming your skin type to be oily / dry / normal may land you in trouble. There can be a million types of combination skin. Therefore, get your skin type checked and confirmed by a specialist before you shop for products.
- With age, the rejuvenation process of the skin slows down, therefore, you want better skin 10 years down the line, start working towards it right now.
- Moisturizing is NOT nourishing the skin with essence. It is only about forming a protective layer on the skin, which would keep the moisture locked in.
- Skincare doesn't translate to only the face. "A very well-known actress in her 50s has maintained a fabulous face - tight, supple skin and clear complexion. Unfortunately, her hands - darkened, with lines and loose skin - give away her age! Please include your hands and neck in the skin care routine too!" Mita says.
- Any nutrient in the body, including water, will reach your skin the last. But any damage to your body will first show on your skin. That's why getting all nutrients isn't all - getting them in enough quantities to reach your skin is important.
"The key to healthy skin is a healthy lifestyle" is Mita's mantra.
"Pollution and oily food are known culprits, but have you ever thought about electromagnetic waves? The waves that our mobiles catch can penetrate heaviest walls to reach us - shouldn't they also be affecting our skin?" Mita asks.
Mita, then, lists some simple changes in lifestyle that will go a long way for gorgeous skin:
- More water: Think you drink enough? Get this - one cup of Indian tea (brewed with milk and sugar) drains up to six glasses of water from your body. More water for alcohol and spicy food. Add to this the water drained by sweat and urine. There is almost none left in your body to keep your skin hydrated.
- 'Proper' sleep: Your skin heals itself while you sleep, so at least six hours of uninterrupted sleep is a must. "But remember, sleeping with your face pressed against the pillow or in an awkward position where your facial muscles are tugged and pulled is like inviting wrinkles and lines with a door open wide!" Mita says.
- NO frowns: Stress may makes it impossible, but try you must. Next time you furl those eyebrows together, imagine yourself looking like 50 at the age of 30.
- Correct digestion: Get your internal system on track to get the external glow. "Digestive problems spell an end to glorious skin, so get that on track," says Mita.
"Eyes are the most delicate organ in your body. Unfortunately the skin around eyes is even more delicate! The rules that apply to your face don't apply to under eye area," says Mita.
Problem: Puffiness under her eyes and early signs of dark circles.
Mita's solution:
- Green tea helps to revitalize your under eye area.
- No harsh products for the under eye area. Apply a specially formulated under eye revitalizing eye contour gel every night like Clarins Eye Contour Gel.
- NEVER forget to take off the eye make-up - NOT with harsh soap or exfoliater, but with gentle cleansing products.

Problem: T zone is oily, which is a specific problem for women with combination skin. Sometimes, the pores in her T zone are blocked, leading to blackheads. Also, forehead is developing worry lines, giving way to premature aging.
Mita's solution:
- Toning the skin of the T zone should help with the blackheads - a proper toner helps minimize the pores.
Rec: Clarins Toning Lotion - Use products specially formulated for cleansing oily skin for the T zone, but not for the face, since it will dry up your cheeks.
- Gentle exfoliation with a peel is a must - while it may be tempting to use any grainy powder as a scrub , it is totally wrong. Since the particles in these exfoliants are not consistent, they harm the skin more than help it. Instead of these, a simple peel mask may be more effective.
Rec: Clarins Truly Matte Pure and Radiant Mask - As for the lines on the forehead, apply and replenish the hydrating tightening gel every time you wash or cleanse your face. Aloe vera pulp might help as well.

Problem: Your complexion is smooth and problem-free. "All you need to do is maintain the complexion," says Mita.
Mita's solution:
- Pollution and stress take away important nutrients from the skin. These need to be replenished with a nourishing cream, that can reach inside the skin and work there. Remember - these nourishing creams are not a substitute for a moisturizer.
Rec: Clarins Bright Plus HP Repairing Brightening Night Cream - Never use an alcohol-based toner - "in fact, everyone should ban alcohol-based toner, because it is too harsh on any skin and leaves it dry and protection-less," says Mita.
Rec: Clarins Toning Lotion - Dry/Normal Skin - NEVER rub or pull your skin while applying products. "Women tend to rub a cream in or pull and tug the skin while cleaning. That, over a lifetime is too much damage!" Mita says.
- The BEST way to apply any product is "in light pressing movements from inwards to outwards."
Problem: The neck and hands are also relatively problem-free, with an occasional pimple that pops up.
Mita's solution:
- Use a topical solution by Clarins - it is made from a specific tree oil, that helps dry up the acne immediately.
Rec: Clarins Bright Plus HP On-the-Spot Brightening Corrector - A proper SPF 30 sun-block is essential to avoid tanning of the neck and hands.
Rec: Clarins Sun Wrinkle Control Cream SPF 30 - A peeling mask will reduce the visibility of pimple scars on the face.
Rec: Clarins Bright Plus HP Intensive Brightening Mask - To get more firmness and suppleness in the skin on the neck and hands, a nourishing cream massage is essential.
