For the past few years, when it comes to eyebrow products, I have been in a monogamous relationship with Diorshow Brow Styler Ultra-Fine Precision Brow Pencil. I've never been brow endowed (the gene skipped me and went to my younger sister), and the Diorshow pencil has served me well. The only issue I ever had with the DiorShow was its staying power. 99% of the time, it's fine and the pigment stays put. But if it's sweltering and I start sweating, it doesn't last (literally) a hot minute.
So what's a sweaty, follicularly-challenged gal to do? Call up QVC, that's what.
You see, QVC sells a fabulous product from It Cosmetics called the Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil. It's truly universal because it transforms and adjusts to all brow hair colors. Apply lighter, softer strokes to match lighter color hair, including blonde and silver. Press harder for darker hair, including medium brown to black. As a finishing touch, lightly brush through brows with the spooly brush for a natural, polished look. A full brow-lift instruction diagram is included with each pencil.
The oval shaped tip creates a natural looking, believable brow and is perfect for both thin and thick brows. And an exclusive "Brow Enhancing Complex" uses a patent-pending blend of cutting-edge ingredients to target the look of brow hair loss, and helps restore your brow hair follicles - promoting the look of healthy hair growth and health.
But the best thing about this pencil is its staying power. It's water- and smudge-proof. So even if it's so hot that your face is melting off - like that evil dude from Raiders of The Lost Ark (left), your eyebrows will stay put.
And for every Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil sold, It Cosmetics gives one to Look Good...Feel Better, an American Cancer Society program that teaches female cancer patients beauty tips to look better and feel good about how they look during chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
While the product isn't exclusive to QVC, you get more bang for your buck buying from them. One Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil retails for $24, but at QVC, you can get two for $31.82...or one Brow Power Pencil plus a highlighting pencil for just $26.34.

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Belle of the Brows
Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.
Hi Mario,
I have sparse eyebrows, but I love the look of thick eyebows (like Camilla Belle's). Do you have tips for filling in sparse brows so that they still look believable? Every time I try, I feel like the color is off or I'm too heavy-handed with the application - and the result isn't realistic. Application and product suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks a ton!
Eryn
Hi Eryn,
You should start out by filling in your brows with a brow pencil that is lighter then your hair. I recommend a pencil that has a very thin tip like MAC's Eye Brows pencils. Fill in the inner corners of the brows with light upward strokes to mimic natural brow hairs and continue towards the outer corners. It's very important that you brush through the brows a couple of times to blend and soften the pencil. Next you should fill them in again with a eye shadow, using a thin slanted brow brush. The powder shadow should be very similar in color to the pencil (don't go much darker) because it will darken once it's over the pencil. Brush through and blend again. The layering of the light pencil and light powder blended into your brows should create a natural looking texture.
For those of you who once upon a time had a full brow, tweezed and waxed them for years and now can't grow them back, I sometimes recommend using Rogaine on the eye brows every night before bedtime. Results are not guaranteed but it does work on many women after continued use. Give it a try.

Best Way To Fill In Sparse Brows

"Use two sharpened brow pencils, one slightly lighter than your own brow color and one that matches. Start with the darker pencil, drawing a few delicate strokes in the direction the brows grow to create the illusion of individual hairs. Repeat with the lighter pencil. This mimics the color variation found in natural brows so you don't get that drawn-in look. Comb the brows to finish. You can use the same technique with powder shadow, though it can appear heavy if you apply too much. Use an angled brow brush to fill in sparse areas with a powder that matches your brows, and follow with a brow comb to distribute the color and soften any hard edges."

MAC Brow Set: Bert-like Brows Begone!

But, to my surprise, Brow Set in Mink shaded and shaped my brows into better (and believable) versions of themselves. I mean, if I was a stranger who didn't know any better, I would have thought that Audrey Hepburn brows just naturally grow out of my forehead.
Besides Mink (dirty brown), Brow Set is also available in Show-off (rich brown), Beguile (full-bodied taupe), Girl Boy (fawn-blonde), and Clear. If you've got brows with severe behavioral problems, I wouldn't recommend this product; the hold is flexible, and the look subtle. Brow Set can also be used on lashes.

MAC All Ages, All Races, All Sexes Swatches

The release date for All Ages, All Races, All Sexes is January 7, 2010...though, like most MAC collections, it will probably be available a few days in advance. I got my hands on some early samples (MAC sent them for me to review), and the shades are so beautiful in person. The images and press release I had previously seen didn't do them justice.
When the collections comes out, I'll be picking up one or two of the lipglasses. I'm a sucker for MAC lipglass and these frosty neutrals look Rihanna approved.
So, without further ado, here are some swatches and close-up product pics from All Ages, All Races, All Sexes.
Here's my favorite product of the bunch - Eye Shadow in Banshee (dirty taupe with frost and sparkle diamond cluster - lustre).
Here's Banshee again...this time, with flash.
Left to right: Impeccable Brow Pencil in Dirty Blonde (cool light brown); Penultimate Brow Marker; Brow Set in Mink (dirty brown)
Eye Shadow in Showstopper (deep blackened brown - matte) and Pigment in Rich Life (dark cool brown with silver pearl - frost)
Close up of Pigment in Rich Life
Lipstick in 5N (plumy sheer brown - lustre) and Myself (creamy pale yellow beige - lustre)

Dior Jazz Club Eye Palette Hits All The Right Notes
If you have eyes, I insist that you purchase Dior Jazz Club Eye Palette as soon as said eyes finish reading this review.
The limited edition, all-in-one palette features: cream to powder black liner, brow shaping powder, four eyeshadows and a top coat. The major selling point of this palette (which just so happens to have the chicest packaging eva) is the topcoat. In the tray, it deceivingly looks like shimmering snow, but it applies super sheer.
When you layer it on top of shadow, it goes all Emeril on you. BAM...in an instant, it kicks the color up a notch by imparting a sparkly, iridescence. Use the topcoat with any of the palette's shadows - or in tandem with the any of the shadows in your makeup arsenal. I swear - it gives old products new life.
Dior Jazz Club Eye Palette and your lids should make beautiful music together. Don't fight fate. Pick it up now at Nordstom.

Take A Brow, Michelle Obama: Your Softer Arches Are Just The Change You Needed

Last Fall, while at New York Fashion Week, I got to talking with the Bobbi Brown. Bobbi was sporting an Obama '08 pin, so we started chatting about Michelle's makeup and favorite Bobbi Brown products. Towards the end of the conversation, I asked Bobbi her opinion of Michelle's eyebrows; I told Bobbi that, though Michelle can do no wrong in my eyes, her arches could use some softening. Bobbi smiled and nodded, adding that if she was Michelle's makeup artist, she would give Michelle a less angular arch.
Around the same time, Michelle Obama's actual makeup artist, Chicago-based makeup artist Ingrid Grimes-Myles, was getting the same criticism about Michelle's brows.
"When she started getting that feedback—I have a rule: When three or more people give you feedback, that means hundreds are talking about it—then what I began to do is bring them down and train them down," Grimes-Myles said.
If you take a close look at Michelle's current brows and compare them the ones she sported at the Democratic National Convention, you'll notice that the arch is less exaggerated.

The Chicago Tribune has a great article about Michelle's brow evolution, which includes some tasty beauty tidbits (Michelle loves MAC lip pencils and gloss).

Thread Beauty Bar Giveaway!

A few months ago, my mom told me that she and my sister had gone to get their eyebrows threaded at this kiosk in the King of Prussia Mall. I had been dying to jump on the threading bandwagon, but didn’t really imagine my first foray into this ancient art of hair removal going down in the middle of a congested shopping center. I mean, no one needs to know about my moustache maintenance. I exaggerate, but you get my point. So at the end of my mother’s threading kiosk narrative, she tells me that, while standing in line, she met a woman with the most amazing eyebrows. “Did she get them done at the kiosk?” I breathlessly asked. My mom said no, that she had just opened her own day spa downtown. As is usually the case with Mama Spoiled Pretty, she couldn’t recall the pertinent details, like the name of the spa or the location. But she remembered the woman’s name…Dara. So I started sleuthing and soon solved the mystery.
For forever, if you were a phillie from Philly who wanted her arches threaded, it used to entail a trip to New York. And for years, Dara King made the 100 mile trip to maintain her enviable eyebrows. Weary of making the trek, this former Temple University business student hatched a plan for Philadelphia to catch up to her trend-setting big sis, NYC. Not only would she open a threading salon, she would become proficient in this art – and teach every one of the technicians who worked there. She would add manis/pedis, facials, and makeup application to the menu of services – using a range of botanically-based products. And as the icing on the proverbial cake, forget about scheduling a treatment in advance…because appointments aren’t necessary.
So thanks to Dara and her entrepreneurial vision, we Philly girls can save ourselves a trip on NJ Transit, Amtrak, or the Chinatown bus – because Thread Beauty Bar is right in our backyard!
Thread Beauty Bar, located at 1903 Chestnut Street, opened to rave reviews this spring…so on my lunch break one day, I walked on over to see what all the hype was about. The spa isn’t the easiest to find; the entrance to the 2nd floor walk-up is a little obscure. But once you ascend the stairs to this modern and spacious beauty oasis – you’ll fall in love with this hidden gem.
Even without an appointment, I waited less than ten minutes. My eyebrow shaping and upper lip threading took less than five. And, here’s the kicker – it only cost $20!
If you’ve never been threaded or haven’t seen how it’s done – here’s a crash course:

The sensation is beyond words…I can’t even begin to articulate. Oddly fascinating is the only way I can describe it. I’ve been waxed a ka-trillion times, so that process (and the pain that accompanies it) is old hat for me. And in the discomfort category, threading beats waxing every time. It’s a TKO. I wouldn’t even describe the feeling as pain…and it’s over so quickly that even big babies will be able to bite the bullet.
Thread Beauty Bar is open late (check the website for days and hours of operation) - so even after the hour strikes 7pm and Rittenhouse boutiques kick your shopaholic ass out, you can walk down the street and get prettified. And for parties of six or more, Thread offers birthday, bachelorette, bridal, girls night out, and corporate parties.
Because I can’t keep a good thing to myself, Spoiled Pretty is partnering with Thread Beauty Bar for a giveaway! If you live in the Greater Philadelphia area, enter to win a $50 gift card to Thread Beauty Bar.
To enter, send an email to spoiledprettycontests@gmail.com. Be sure to include your full name. The subject line should read "Thread Giveaway." The contest ends at midnight (EST) on Friday, September 12th. One winner will be chosen at random from among the entrants. On Saturday, September 13th, I'll announce the winner's name. Please, only one entry per person; duplicate entries will not increase your chances of winning.
Good luck!

Belle Of The Brows: Anastasia Brow Enhancing Serum

Between shaving, waxing, threading, and laser removal, women spend an inordinate amount of money getting rid of unwanted hair. But it only costs $35 to restore thin, over-plucked, and undernourished eyebrows - thanks to Anastasia.
Brow Enhancing Serum is a colorless and odorless gel, comprised of a unique blend of proteins. The deep conditioning action works to help stimulate the hair follicle in as quickly as 4-6 weeks. An easy-to-use applicator allows the non-greasy formula to glide on smooth without tugging or pulling and is gentle enough to be used every day. Brow Enhancing Serum is not harmful to the eyes or the surrounding skin area, plus as an added bonus, it also slows down excess hair loss, which results in a healthier fuller-looking brow.
For quite a while, I've been trying (in vain) to embrace the thicker brow trend. But genetics have not been in my favor. After using Brow Enhancing Serum, I noticed an improvement very quickly...quicker than the 4 weeks Anastasia promises.

Anastasia Brow Enhancing Serum is available at Sephora and anastasia.net.
